Mary Shelly’s Gothic romance, “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus”, is often considered to be one of the earliest examples of the science fiction novel. Shelly had travelled throughout Europe and, when visiting in Germany, she became fascinated with the local story of an alchemist who had lived two centuries before in Frankenstein Castle. Her curiosity led her to dream about a scientist who experimented in creating life, which eventually led her to write the novel that would establish her fame. The first edition was published anonymously in 1818 in London, though Shelley's name appears on the second edition, which was published in France in 1823. Despite some initial unfavorable critical reviews, it became an immediate popular success.
